About this artwork The artwork “Rebirth” is a collage that weaves together fragments of Israel’s nature and culture, my first vocabulary lists as I learned the language, and excerpts from Nikolai Gogol’s book in Hebrew. It captures my journey of assimilation into a new place—one that moves from the simplest beginnings to the most complex stages of adaptation. At the center stands a symbol I created through linocut: a hamsa—an open palm, a universal emblem of protection and openness. They say that when a person arrives in a new land, they must “become a child again”—learning, absorbing, and discovering the world anew. The five fingers of the hamsa take the form of female figures, each representing a stage of creation and transformation: waiting, pregnancy, birth, nurturing, and letting go. These figures also embody the five senses—sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—the essential tools through which a child perceives the world. Just as a newborn must integrate these senses to understand life, so must an immigrant, using them to navigate, embrace, and ultimately become part of a new reality.
